European Champion Rafa Retires from Portugal National Team, Joins FC Porto

The final whistle blew, a roar erupted, and Portugal claimed its 22nd European Championship. For Rafa, the seasoned forward, this triumph wasn’t just another medal; it was a bittersweet farewell. He left the national team stage exactly how every athlete dreams – on top, with a trophy in hand.

The 33-year-old star revealed his decision early. “On the first day of training camp, I announced this would be my last competition with the national team,” Rafa told RTP after the game. His voice carried a sense of peace. “I leave with a clear conscience. I always gave everything for my country.” But more than the wins, he cherishes the bonds forged. “Above all, what I take with me are the friendships and my teammates,” he added.

Walking away is never easy, especially from something you love. “I will definitely miss all of this,” Rafa admitted, a hint of emotion in his tone. “But that’s how life is. Some choices just have to be made.” Yet, the moment was also filled with pure joy. “I am very happy to celebrate this title with my daughter in my arms,” he shared, describing a truly special scene.

As the team reveled in their victory, captain Hélder Nunes made a touching gesture. He called Rafa forward, inviting the departing legend to help lift the coveted trophy. It was a moment of respect for a player who contributed so much. While his national team journey ends here, Rafa’s club career continues; he will still hit the rink for FC Porto.
