England’s cricket team made a big announcement during the IPL 2025. Their star player, Jos Buttler, stepped down as captain of the ODI and T20 teams after the 2025 season. Now, Harry Brook takes over as the new captain. Brook has impressed many with his strong performances for England.
Buttler became captain in June 2022, taking over from Ian Morgan. England won the T20 World Cup in 2022, but things didn’t go well after that. They didn’t do great in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024. The team also had a disappointing showing in the Champions Trophy 2025, getting knocked out in the group stage. That’s when Buttler decided to step down as captain.
Brook’s Rise to Captaincy
Brook has played 44 T20 and 26 ODI matches for England. He’s done a great job and is now ready to lead the team. Brook said, “Being captain of the England cricket team is an honor. Since I was a kid playing cricket in Warford, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day being captain. Now I have that chance, and it means a lot to me.”
Brook has scored 816 runs in 26 ODI matches, with one century and five half-centuries. In T20 matches, he’s scored 798 runs with four half-centuries. He’s also played 24 Test matches, scoring 2281 runs.
