Electric cars: Tesla loses ground in Europe, but this model remains in the Top

The European market for electric cars again presented very positive metrics during the 1st half of 2022. Again, in fact, sales grew during the first six months of the year, but without the Tesla in Elon Musk regain first place in sales.

With a total of 633,200 electric vehicles, the so-called “green cars” to be registered in Europe during the first half, the market would grow by 31% compared to the same period in 2021. By the way, in the first half of 2021 485,000 new cars were registered electricity, evidencing the strong growth trend of this sector in our market.

However, not all automakers were able to take advantage of this “green wave”. The growth potential has yet to be fully exploited by Elon Musk’s Tesla, who recently opened the new Giga Factory, a large-scale production line in the heart of Germany, in Berlin.

It will still take several months until all the edges are smoothed out. Only then will the most popular electric car brand be able to capture the full potential of this expanding market. In fact, due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the successive quarantines, the production volume ended up suffering a serious setback.

In light of the above, Elon Musk’s Tesla continued to rely on production lines in Shanghai, China, to feed the European market. As a result, we saw their market share in Europe fall from 13.75% in the first half of 2021 to 13.33%. This is during the first half of this year.

Tesla Model 3 is second only to Tesla Model Y in Europe

However, its Model Y continued to dominate the charts, proving to be the best-selling vehicle in the last six months with a total of 44,472 new units sold in Europe.

Specifically, in June 2022 the registrations of new Tesla Model 3 vehicles fell by 76% compared to the values registered in June 2021. Even so, given the volume of registered units, sales of this model were very positive.

The latest data shows that the Tesla Model 3 has a serious rival to the Model Y as the most popular car in Europe. In third place is the Fiat 500 E, followed by the Peugeot E-208, and only after that is the Volkswagen ID.4. However, the Volkswagen group is the current sales leader in Europe, followed by the Stellantis group, with Tesla in third place.

Looking at the Tesla Model 3, we see the BMW i4 and Polestar 2 as its most direct rivals. Furthermore, Elon Musk’s Model Y is also capturing the attention of consumers, both in Europe and in the US domestic market.

Volkswagen Group leads sales in Europe, in third place we have Tesla

Looking at the big picture, we see that the BMW Group is growing like no other in this segment. Specifically, increasing its market share by 8.37% thanks to electric vehicles such as the iX, X3, as well as the BMW i4. All these vehicles with an electric motor were well received in the market, catapulting the Bavarian manufacturer.

It is also important to pay attention to the Hyundai group with the Hyundai Kawai models, in addition to the KIA EV6 and the Niro model, which are well received in Europe. However, the European market is still dominated by the Volkswagen group, with Stellantis in second place.
