Prison Security Under Threat
The use of drones to smuggle contraband into high-security prisons in the United Kingdom has become a significant threat to national security. This is according to a report by the Inspectorate of Prisons, the body responsible for managing prisons in the country.
Loss of Control Over Prison Airspace
Charlie Taylor, the chief inspector of the service, has accused the police and the British Government of relinquishing control of the airspace over prisons. This accusation comes after two inspections were carried out at the prisons in Manchester and Long Lartin between September 17 and October 30, 2024.
Taylor expressed his concerns, stating that it is alarming that the police and prison service have effectively given up control of the airspace over two high-security prisons to organized crime gangs. These gangs are able to send contraband to prisons where extremely dangerous prisoners are held.
Illicit Economy and Security Concerns
The inspections revealed that both prisons had an illicit economy of drugs, mobile phones, and weapons. Basic security measures, such as protection networks and video surveillance systems, had been allowed to fall into disuse.
The report also highlighted that 39% of Manchester prison inmates tested positive for drugs, while 50% of inmates at Long Lartin said in interviews that it is “easy to get drugs and alcohol” in the center.
Increased Violence and Self-Inflicted Deaths
Violence in prisons has increased, partly due to drugs and debt incurred by prisoners. This has led to six self-inflicted deaths in Manchester since the last inspection in 2021, with a seventh occurring weeks later. This makes Manchester one of the most violent prisons in the country.
Call to Action
Taylor emphasized that the prison service, police, and other security services must urgently tackle organized gang activity and reduce the supply of drugs and other illicit items that undermine all aspects of prison life.
Government Response
In response to an urgent question in the House of Commons, the Secretary of State for Justice, Nicolas Dakin, acknowledged that drones are a cause for great concern. He added that the Labor Government inherited a prison system in crisis, with an increase in violence and drug use.
Dakin explained that the government is investing in improvements to the windows, nets, and bars to prevent prisoners from receiving shipments. However, he could not provide further details on the measures being taken due to security implications.
