Drew Smyly flirts with a perfect game and the Cubs triumph

Drew Smyly missed the perfect game in the eighth inning after colliding with his catcher while trying to field a loose ground ball that ended up being an infield single, and the Chicago Cubs routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-0 Friday.

Nico Hoerner had a three-run homer as part of his four hits and four RBIs as Chicago won for the fifth time in the last six games. Cody Bellinger homered for the second straight day and third time this season against his former team. Trey Mancini and Patrick Wisdom also homered.

Smyly (2-1) struck out 10 and didn’t walk ones in 7 2-3 innings. He threw 103 pitches, 68 of which were for strikes.

David Peralta was the Dodgers’ lone baserunner against Smyly after leading off the eighth inning with a loose groundout to third base. Smyly and Yan Gomes went for the ball, but the catcher collided with the pitcher as the lefty picked up the ball.

After a visit from manager David Ross and the team doctor, Smyly stayed in the game and flied out Miguel Vargas to third base and struck out James Outman before leaving the game.

Jeremiah Estrada finished the one-hit shutout for Chicago.

The Dodgers lost for the fourth time in six games. Julio Urías (3-2) allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings after losing to the Cubs in his previous start.

For the Cubs, Brazilian Yan Gomes 5-1 with a run scored.

For the Dodgers, the Venezuelan Peralta 1-1. Cuban Miguel Vargas 3-0.
