Justin Turner homered twice, including a two-run shot in the seventh inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 Thursday in the first game of a four-game series between the best teams in the National League West Division.
The Dodgers have won 12 of 13 meetings with San Diego since Aug. 24, outscoring the Padres 72-29 in that span. They extended their division lead to 2.5 games.
Turner was the only standout in the Dodgers’ offense, going 3-for-3 when the rest of the team went 2-for-25. Freddie Freeman’s 13-game hitting streak ended with no hits in four at-bats, with one strikeout.
Evan Phillips (2-3) got the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out one. Craig Kimbrel retired in order in the ninth for his 14th save of the season.
For the Padres, Dominican Nomar Mazara 2-1 with RBI. Colombian Jorge Alfaro 1-0.
