Utpal Dutt was born on March 29, 1929 in a place called Barisal in West Bengal. Utpal Dutt belongs to a Bengali Hindu family. His father was Girijaranjan Dutt, who worked in Barisal. Utpal Dutt’s early education was in Shillong, Meghalaya, but his college studies were at St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta.

He starred in great films like Angoor and Golmaal, his acting style was so different that even governments got scared when they knew who he was.

Utpal Dutt graduated with honors in English literature. Utpal Dutt married actress Shobha Sen in 1960, by whom he has an only daughter, Bishnupriya Dutt. Bishnupriya was a professor at the Theater and Performance Studies School of Arts, Jawaharlal Nehru, Delhi.

Utpal Dutt has enjoyed performing in theater since his student days. He was one of the founders of the Indian Pupils Theater Association (IPTA), founded in 1943. He continued to work in theater for a long time, but in 1950, Michael Madhusudan signed his first film, a Bengali film.

Utpal Dutt worked in many Bengali films but later thought of doing Hindi films and came to Mumbai. After a lot of hard work, Utpal Dutt got his first Hindi film Guddi. He then gained recognition through the film Golmaal (1969).

His comedy style forced people to laugh with their stomachs. After that, Utpal Dutt performed ‘Kisi Se Na Kehna’, ‘Naram Garam’, ‘Apne Parae’, ‘Inquilab’, ‘Shaukeen’, ‘Rang Birangi’, ‘Baat Ban Jaye’, ‘Do Anjaane’, ‘Angoor’. , Played important roles in many superhit films like Bahurani.

Actress and host Tabassum, who held special conversations with film celebrities, had shared many untold things about Utpal Dutt in one of her shows. When asked what Utpal Dutt’s specialty was, he gave a very good answer.

Tabassum had reportedly said about Utpal Dutt, “He was such an actor who could speak long dialogues in one breath.” This long dialogue was also spoken in such a different style that the listener could not get bored. There was another skill in his voice that only he could master. He always used to say that the mark of a good comedian is that he should not include vulgarity in his comedy.

According to media reports, the Congress government of West Bengal had sent him to prison in 1965. He remained in custody for several months and was then released. It is said that a play by Utpal Dutt titled ‘Kallol’ (Sound of Waves), which had an anti-government message, terrified the then state government.

The government had then said that this play might upset the general public because Utpal Dutt had portrayed the life of a revolutionary in a different way. Utpal Dutt read Shakespeare’s novels, wrote plays and acted in them.

Utpal Dutt had acted in around 300 films in his film career, including Bengali and Hindi films. He had received everything from Filmfare to National Awards. In the early 90s he had kidney problems.

Utpal Dutt was on dialysis for a long time. On August 19, 1993, he suddenly suffered a heart attack and died. Utpal Dutt is no more, but he will always remain alive in the hearts of fans through his unparalleled films.
