Disney Infinity Vision: Why the new theater format is bypassing IMAX for Avengers Doomsday

The theatrical exhibition market has a massive bottleneck. Disney simply cannot secure enough IMAX screens for its upcoming blockbuster slate, and the third-party licensing fees are astronomical. Their solution is entirely in-house. On April 16, 2026, at CinemaCon, Walt Disney Studios partnered with global exhibitors to officially launch “Infinity Vision.”

It is a brand-new premium large format (PLF) certification. The program officially debuts in September 2026 with a theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame. That sets the stage for the massive December 2026 rollout of Avengers: Doomsday. Disney expects over 75 domestic and 300 global screens to carry the certification on day one.

Infinity Vision is not a new piece of physical hardware you can buy. It operates as a strict quality assurance stamp. To earn the badge, theater chains must dedicate their largest possible screens to the format. They must also install advanced laser projection for maximum brightness and fully immersive premium audio, according to the technical certification requirements detailed at CinemaCon.

Why Infinity Vision Threatens the IMAX and Dolby Duopoly

This represents a massive strategic pivot. Disney is actively bypassing the traditional titans of premium event cinema. By creating its own certification program, the studio can unify existing third-party PLF screens—like Cinemark XD or Regal RPX—under a single, Disney-backed marketing banner. This shifts massive leverage back to the studio side of the industry.

The initiative strongly mirrors Lucasfilm’s original THX Theater Alignment Program from the 1980s. It is a modern-day quality assurance stamp rather than a completely new projection system. This empowers a single film studio to dictate the exhibition standards of third-party theater chains. Ultimately, Disney is consolidating total control over how its major event films are marketed, presented, and consumed globally.
