Diego Dabove is no longer Banfield's coach

Despite having a positive record, Diego Dabove stopped being Banfield’s coach on Tuesday after a meeting with the leadership.

Thus, the former goalkeeper’s stay in the Drill lasted just seven months, with a record of 10 wins, 7 draws and 9 losses in 26 games.

Dabove met in the morning at Luis Guillón’s premises with president Eduardo Spinosa and by “common agreement” they decided to end the relationship, according to the club in a statement.

Banfield closed its participation in the League Cup on Monday night with a 1-1 draw against Atlético Tucumán, at home, but still has two games to play in the Copa Sudamericana.

The bad present of the team made it quickly forget the good start of the Dabove cycle, who took the reins at the close of the 2021 League after the departure of Javier Sanguinetti and an internship of Hugo Donato, with whom Banfield added just two wins in the first 18 contest dates (9 draws and 7 falls).

Dabove’s record in that 2021 League was 3-3-1, while the current League Cup ended in eighth position in Zone 1 with a 5-4-5 mark.

Worse is the situation in the South American where, despite starting the tournament with a resounding 1-0 win at home against the legendary Brazilian Santos, they are last in their group after adding three defeats in a row. Banfield has 3 points, behind Unión La Calera (8), Santos (7) and Universidad Católica de Ecuador (4). As only the first of each zone qualifies for the next phase, the Banfileño elimination is almost a fact in the absence of two dates (U. Católica as local on Tuesday 17 and Santos as visitor on Tuesday 24).

The three falls in the continental arena are part of a total losing streak of 8 games, with just one win, two draws and five falls.

This was the fifth club in Dabove’s career, 49 years old, who had very good steps for Godoy Cruz (67 percent effectiveness in 31 games) and Argentinos Juniors (53.3% in 65) to later sign weak performances in San Lorenzo (45.5% in 22) and Bahía de Brasil (27.8% in 6), up to Banfield (47.4% in 26).
