Delhi Capitals Win Thriller Against Mumbai Indians in WPL Opener

Delhi Capitals pulled off a thrilling two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in their first match of the WPL 2025. The match was a nail-biter, with Delhi sealing the deal in the final over. Captain Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to bowl first, and Mumbai went on to score 164 runs. Delhi’s Shefali Verma and Nikki Prasad played crucial roles in helping their team achieve the target.

The Thrilling Finish

In the final over, Delhi needed 10 runs to win, with Radha Yadav and Nikki Prasad at the crease. Mumbai’s Saika Ishaque took on the bowling responsibility. Nikki hit a four off the first ball, but was dismissed on the fifth. With two runs needed off the last ball, drama unfolded as Radha Yadav completed the second run, narrowly avoiding a run-out thanks to a throw from Harmanpreet that just missed the stumps. The replay showed she had made it to the crease just in time, securing the win for Delhi.

Historic Chase

Delhi achieved the highest successful run chase in the WPL, overcoming a target of 165 runs. Shefali Verma led the charge with 43 runs, while Nikki Prasad contributed 35. Their performances were instrumental in Delhi’s victory. This feat is a milestone for the Delhi Capitals, marking the first time they’ve successfully chased down such a high target in the WPL.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s Half-Century

Nat Sciver-Brunt smashed an unbeaten 80, including 13 fours. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also made a significant contribution, scoring 42 runs off 22 balls. The duo combined for a 73-run partnership off 40 balls for the third wicket. Although Delhi’s bowlers staged a comeback, claiming eight wickets for 59 runs to dismiss Mumbai for 164 in 19.1 overs, the damage had been done.

Shikha Pandey’s Bowling

Fast bowler Shikha Pandey picked up two wickets for 14 runs, while Minnu Mani was economical, conceding 23 runs for one wicket. The rest of the bowlers were expensive. Shikha dismissed both openers, Hayley Matthews (0) and Yastika Bhatia (11), to put pressure on Mumbai early on.
