Singer D’Angelo, born Michael D’Angelo Archer, has died at 51 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. His death was announced on Tuesday, October 14.
His daughter, Imani Archer, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram the following day. She expressed profound grief and shock over the loss.
Imani described her father as her greatest support, protector, and musical inspiration. She also called him the kindest, most selfless man and the best father.
Her emotional post, accompanied by several photos, lamented not having more time with him. She wished for more shared musical moments and conversations about favorite foods.
“You are a one-of-a-kind soul, and I am so grateful you chose me to be your daughter,” Imani wrote. She promised to honor his legacy, concluding, “I will always be your BabyGirl.”
D’Angelo’s family confirmed his passing in a statement to Us Weekly. They revealed he had fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.
“The bright star of our family has extinguished its light for us in this life,” the family stated. They acknowledged his legacy of “extraordinarily moving music.”
The family requested privacy during this difficult time. They invited fans to join them in mourning and celebrating his musical gift to the world.
RCA, D’Angelo’s record label, also released a statement expressing deep sadness. They hailed him as an unparalleled visionary.
The label noted his ability to effortlessly blend classic soul, funk, gospel, R&B, and jazz with a hip-hop sensibility. He was known for his perfectionism.
D’Angelo released three albums throughout his career, all widely celebrated as masterpieces. He garnered numerous awards and critical acclaim for his talent.
In addition to Imani, D’Angelo is survived by another son, Michael Archer II. Michael’s mother was the late singer Angie Stone.
Stone tragically died in a car accident in March, just seven months before D’Angelo’s death. This marks a year of significant loss for the family.
Michael Archer II released his own statement to People. He acknowledged the “very complicated and sad year” for him.
“I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts,” he said. Michael affirmed his intention to remain strong, a lesson taught by both his parents.
