Mathieu Baumel, a well-known co-driver in rallies, is in a serious condition and in a pharmacological coma after being involved in an accident. According to La Provence newspaper, the incident occurred on Wednesday at around 7:00 p.m. Baumel is considered a legend in the Dakar rally, having participated in the event more than ten times since his first appearance in 2005. He has had a successful career, including four victories as co-pilot to Nasser al-Attiyah.

Baumel has been participating in rallies for many years and has worked with several drivers. In 2025, he participated in the Dakar rally with Belgian driver Guillaume de Mevius, using a Mini vehicle. During this event, they won one stage. Baumel’s experience and skills have made him a respected figure in the world of rally racing. He was scheduled to participate in the Historic Montecarlo Rally, which takes place after the World Cup event WRC.

The accident occurred while Baumel was on his way to the start of the Historic Montecarlo Rally. He had stopped on a highway in Reims to assist another vehicle that was stopped, but his car was struck by another vehicle. This information was provided by his father, Gerard Baumel, who is also the mayor of Cérest-in-Luberon. According to Gerard Baumel, his son has fractures in both legs but was aware when he was evacuated to a hospital. However, his condition is serious, and he is in a pharmacological coma.

The vehicle that hit Baumel was a Renault Clio driven by a 73-year-old woman, who had a 70-year-old man as her passenger. Both individuals suffered mild wounds but did not require medical assistance. The speed limit in the area where the accident occurred was 90 km/h. The woman underwent an alcohol and drug test, which resulted in a negative outcome. The incident is a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for caution when assisting others on the road.
