CSK vs GT: Great feat of ‘Junior Malinga’ in the debut match, wicket taken on the first ball

The 62nd match of IPL 2022 was played between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In this match, Gujarat defeated Chennai by 7 wickets. This is Gujarat’s 10th win this season. At the same time, this is Chennai’s ninth loss in 13 matches. CSK had scored 133 runs from 5 wickets in 20 overs after playing the first. In response, Gujarat Titans easily chased the target losing only 3 wickets in the last over. In this match, Malinga junior from Chennai i.e. Mathisha Pathirana took the wicket on the first ball in the debut match.

Chennai captain MS Dhoni, who came out to defend the 134-run goal, gave the ball to 19-year-old Pathirana in the eighth over. Pathirana, who bowled for the first time in the IPL, did not disappoint the captain and on the first ball, Gujarat starter Shubman Gill was fired lbw. Gill was able to make 18 runs on 17 balls. He bowled brilliantly in his first IPL match, taking 2 wickets for 24 runs in 3.1 overs. Apart from Gill, he made Hardik Pandya his victim. Pandya scored 7 runs on 6 balls.

Mathisha Pathirana did not sell in the mega auction before the IPL, but Chennai listed him as a replacement player in their squad after pacemaker Adam Milne was injured. CSK had signed Mathisha Pathirana for a base price of Rs 20 lakh. Pathirana’s action is similar to that of the legendary bowler Lasith Malinga. This is the reason why he is also known as ‘Junior Malinga’.
