Country manages to reduce monetary poverty by 2.1 percentage points in 2022

The monetary poverty in Dominican Republic fell 2.1 percentage points in 2022going from 23.9% in 2021 to 21.8% last year.

The data was offered by Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, Pável Isa Contreraswho pointed out that, despite the inflationary scenario, at the end of 2022 monetary poverty in the country decreased according to the estimates made by the Inter-Institutional Technical Committee for Poverty Measurement.

In a note, the minister explained that in plain terms, Despite the consequences of the pandemic and international inflation, 200,000 Dominicans increased their income and they were able to acquire a basket of basic goods and services that allows them to live decently, something that in 2021 they did not achieve. 

This behavior was the result of the good performance of the Dominican economy during the year and the increase in employment. Particularly noteworthy is the fourth trimesterin which he said registered a general monetary poverty level of 19.6%the lowest ever observed in the country, which represents a milestone.

“This reduction in the levels of monetary poverty was the result of the strong increase that was verified in employment and labor income of people due to the observed economic growth and the impact of the increase in government monetary transfers to poor or vulnerable households through Supérate”.
