Consumer Watchdog: DAZN ‘Free Month’ Campaign Leads to Surprise Annual Contracts

A Portuguese consumer protection group has formally challenged sports streaming giant DAZN over more than 100 complaints from subscribers who claim they were unknowingly locked into annual contracts after signing up for what they believed was a free monthly trial.

The consumer association, Deco, reported receiving 121 complaints related to DAZN’s “1 Mês Grátis” (1 Month Free) campaign. Consumers asserted they had joined what they understood to be a monthly subscription.

Following the initial free period, these subscribers reported being informed they were bound to a 12-month annual subscription. This plan involved monthly payments of approximately $19.43 (17.99 euros).

Many consumers alleged they did not receive clear information regarding the contract duration or cancellation terms. Some also claimed they were denied their legal right to cancel within the 14-day resolution period.

DAZN, which was formerly known as Eleven Sports, maintained that the campaign’s conditions were clearly published. The company said these terms were available for consultation on its website.

A DAZN official stated that during the subscription process, users are required to confirm their acceptance of these conditions before finalizing their sign-up. The company reiterated its commitment to transparency.

Deco’s analysis of the platform’s terms and conditions indicated that if no minimum term is specified, subscriptions are indefinite and can be canceled with 30 days’ notice. However, if a minimum period, such as 12 months, exists, it must be explicitly stated at the time of subscription.

Deco has contacted DAZN Portugal to seek clarification. The group is working to ensure the company complies with consumer information duties and upholds consumer rights. The association confirmed it would continue to monitor the situation.
