Coinbase is making a big move into a future where artificial intelligence programs don’t just browse the internet, they actively shop on it. The U.S.-based crypto exchange recently unveiled x402 Bazaar, a new online market. This platform is specifically built for AI agents to find and pay directly for information, digital services, or special content in real time. It’s all about small, quick payments using stablecoins.
This new system builds on x402, an open-source payment tool Coinbase launched earlier this year. The x402 protocol lets anyone set up instant transactions on any website. Now, with x402 Bazaar, Coinbase engineers have created a "Google for agents." This setup lets these smart bots instantly purchase what they need. It truly opens up fresh ways for digital business to happen.
A Market for AI Agents
The main idea here is something called "agentic commerce." This is where you tell an AI agent what you want, and the agent goes out and buys it for you. Coinbase believes the market for what these AI agents need is actually much bigger than what humans need to buy directly.
Erik Reppel, who leads engineering for the Coinbase Developer Platform, explained this concept as "pay-per-crawl." It’s a system where AI agents pay to get access to specific data, information, or digital content. This helps them make smarter and more informed decisions. Reppel put it simply, saying, "Think of this as paywalls for scrapers." The x402 system aims to meet these needs efficiently, without relying on old-school subscriptions or advertising models.
Real-World Uses and Early Projects
The x402 Bazaar already has some practical uses. One early example is Prixe, a stock price service that helps AI agents create up-to-date financial reports. The platform also includes services for generating images and videos. You can even subscribe to live streams of sports or financial data.
Coinbase gave clear examples of how this works. An AI agent could pay a small fee to get the very latest market data. It might also order a custom illustration from a generative AI model. Or, it could subscribe to a real-time information feed. All these transactions happen automatically and quickly with stablecoin micropayments.
Growing Opportunities
The company stresses that almost any digital item or piece of content can be bought and sold through this new system. The goal is for the list of available services to keep growing. This will create many more possibilities for automated work across all kinds of industries.
Reppel mentioned that the x402 system will allow AI agents to act more independently. It creates a space where digital services can be smoothly bought and sold with instant payments. For Coinbase, this big step helps create a more connected and programmable internet. It means the digital economy can keep up with the fast pace of artificial intelligence.
