In an interview with Gamespot, producer Keita Iizaka acknowledged that the Souls Like genre has undergone significant changes since the first Code Vein game was released, and it’s a challenge to keep up.
Iizaka admits that games like Elden Ring have set a high standard, but sees them as competition rather than inspiration. The goal for Code Vein 2 is to create a unique experience that improves upon the original.
Improving the Formula
Code Vein 2 builds upon the foundations of the first game, addressing issues like navigation and unclear objectives. The new game features a more open environment, making it easier for players to find their way and discover new locations.
Exploration remains a key aspect of the game, and the new world is unrelated to the story of the first game. Iizaka describes it as a “new world, new characters, and a new story.” This may be disappointing for fans who were invested in the previous game’s cliffhangers, including the connection to the God Eater universe.
Gameplay and Features
Code Vein 2 retains its unique blend of anime-style visuals and thought-provoking action. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it offers improved gameplay and new features, such as enhanced combat mechanics and stylish animations.
NPCs continue to play a crucial role in the game, and Iizaka believes this is what sets Code Vein 2 apart from other games. Players can choose their companions based on their preferred playstyle, and Iizaka is confident that fans will enjoy the game whether they’re new to the series or not.
