China’s tech scene just got a lot more interesting. At the Beijing Yizhuang Half Marathon, 21 humanoid robots from various Chinese companies and universities took to the track alongside thousands of human runners. This wasn’t just a show – it was a real competition, with the robots vying to complete the 21-kilometer course.
The robots on display were diverse, ranging from 120 cm to 180 cm tall. Some were decked out in running shoes, while others sported boxing gloves or headbands with motivational messages like “Must Win.” One robot even had a feminine appearance, complete with blinking eyes and a smile. Some companies reportedly tested their robots in secret before the event.
The competition was a mixed bag. While some robots performed relatively well, others struggled to stay upright. One robot crashed into a barrier, taking its controller down with it. Another stumbled at the starting line, taking a few minutes to get back on its feet.
The Winner
Tiangong Ultra developed by the Beijing Innovation Center of Human Robotics took the top spot in the robot category. With its long legs and algorithm that mimics human running, it completed the course in 2 hours and 40 minutes – not bad, but still a far cry from the human winner, who finished in 1 hour and 2 minutes.
Despite the impressive hardware on display, some Western robotics experts were underwhelmed. They felt that the Chinese companies were focusing too much on movement and not enough on underlying AI intelligence. The robots’ reliance on human assistance and pre-programmed instructions raised questions about their true capabilities.
