Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet recently shared a peek into his private discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, held in Tianjin in 2025. This high-level meeting underscores the deepening bond between the two nations.

Prime Minister Manet took to his Facebook page to highlight the importance of the encounter. He noted that the goal was to boost cooperation between Cambodia and China across various sectors. The Cambodian leader emphasized a desire to see this friendship grow stronger than ever.

President Xi, for his part, echoed this sentiment, according to Prime Minister Manet’s account. He stressed the need for even closer ties between their countries. Xi promised China would keep helping the Cambodian people. This aid includes building up their development capabilities and safeguarding their country’s independence.

A notable point from their talks involved regional stability. China expressed support for a ceasefire between the Cambodian and Thai armed forces. Furthermore, Beijing backed the ASEAN-led monitoring group for this ceasefire, headed by Malaysia. China hopes to see an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) get off the ground very soon.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua also reported on the meeting. President Xi stated that in a world that keeps changing, China and Cambodia should stand shoulder-to-shoulder. He described their friendship as “strong as steel.” Xi believes this close bond will lead to success for both nations. It will also help improve the daily lives of their citizens. Ultimately, this partnership aims to bring peace, stability, and growth to the entire region.
