Chilean President Gabriel Boric took to his social network X account to clearly outline his government’s stance on the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group, emphasizing what he termed the “position of the State of Chile.” This move follows the publication by his Foreign Minister, Alberto Van Klaveren, who addressed the recent actions by Hamas.
The Chilean Chancellor was unequivocal in his condemnation, stating, “The show mounted by the terrorist group Hamas to deliver the remains of the hostages, including children and the elderly Israelis, as well as the deception regarding a mother’s body, are unacceptable and deserve our utmost repudiation. It is another clear violation of international humanitarian law.” This strong stance by the Chilean government reflects its commitment to upholding humanitarian standards and deploring actions that violate them.
Notably, President Boric’s position diverges from that of many other Latin American leaders when it comes to significant global conflicts. He has been a vocal critic of regimes that undermine democratic principles, notably being one of the first heads of state to openly declare Venezuelan leader Maduro a dictator. Boric also stated that the last elections in Venezuela were essentially a ratification of a dictatorship, showing his willingness to speak out against what he sees as injustices and threats to democracy.
Looking ahead, Boric is among the presidents who have confirmed their attendance at the inauguration of Uruguay’s new president, Yamandú Orsi, scheduled for Saturday, March 1st. This demonstrates his engagement with regional politics and his commitment to supporting democratic transitions in the region. Through these actions, Boric continues to cement his reputation as a leader who is not afraid to take a stand on critical issues, whether they be regional or global in nature.
