Charlie Puth is officially in his dad era. The multi-platinum singer released his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!, on Friday. The record marks a massive sonic pivot driven by a sudden wave of life changes. Puth recently married and transitioned into fatherhood. Those adult milestones completely killed his appetite for the petty relationship drama that fueled his early pop hits.
He traded straight pop for a wildly complex “Mary Poppins bag of musical tricks.” Puth teamed up with hitmaker BloodPop to build an intricate landscape of yacht rock, jazz, and classic R&B. Early reviews from the Associated Press and Yahoo Entertainment are already calling it a bold, sincere triumph.
The technical execution is staggering. Puth leaned hard into his “Professor Puth” persona. He stacked the album with live instrumentation, an eight-member choir, and a full orchestra. The guest list is equally chaotic and brilliant. Kenny G rips a saxophone solo on the track “Cry.” Actor Jeff Goldblum delivers a spoken-word interlude on “Until It Happens To You.” Puth even managed to pull yacht-rock gods Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins into the studio alongside Coco Jones and Ravyn Lenae for the standout track “Love in Exile.”
The album’s thematic core lives in its lead single, “Changes.” It tackles the heavy anxieties and shifting responsibilities of adulthood head-on. This mature reinvention arrives just as his cultural footprint expands; Puth recently landed a massive gig to lead pre-game broadcasts for the upcoming Super Bowl. He isn’t chasing viral radio loops anymore. He is building a permanent catalog.
Critics note he occasionally slips into lyrical clichés. His perfect pitch and absurd vocal layering easily mask those minor flaws. Whatever’s Clever! proves Puth is finally comfortable in his own skin. He fully embraced the optimistic, vibrant “dad-core” label.
