Charles and Diana: a slice of their wedding cake sold for more than 2,000 euros at auction

A piece of cake dating from the wedding of Princess Diana and Charles, heir to the British throne, was sold at auction this Wednesday, August 11, for 2,220 pounds, or 2,620 euros.

It is an employee of the Queen Mother, Moyra Smith, who had recovered and later kept this part of about 800 grams, one of the pieces of the 23 cakes of the mythical wedding of the royal couple.

Made from almond paste, this large portion, wrapped in cling film, is topped with a white glaze, on which the coat of arms of the British royal family appears.

According to the auctioneer for Dominic Winter Auctioneers, interviewed by the BBC, the piece is “in exactly the same condition” as 40 years ago. However, it is strongly recommended not to consume it …

And given its size, “it’s more than likely the side or the top of a single-tier cake,” the auction house said.

“We were surprised by how many people wanted to bid on this big and unique piece of the royal cake,” auctioneer and royal objects specialist Chris Albury told France-Presse (AFP).

The latter received “inquiries” from “the United Kingdom, the United States and several Middle Eastern countries,” he said.

Acquired by Gerry Layton, a private collector based in Leeds, in the north of England, the share was auctioned for £ 1,850 (£ 2,220 including taxes and fees), while it was initially estimated at £ 500, or around € 590. .

Charles and Diana officially divorced in 1996, a year before the tragic death of the Princess of Wales in a car accident in Paris at the age of 36.
