CFE Warns of Power Cuts and Fines for Illegal Electricity Use During April Inspections

Mexico’s state-owned utility company, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), is rolling out a nationwide effort to modernize homes with new electricity meters. As part of this initiative, CFE workers have been visiting homes across the country to install the new meters, which provide more accurate readings and help prevent errors.

What to Expect During the Installation

CFE workers will inspect homes for any irregularities, including the use of illegal devices known as “diablitos” that tamper with electricity consumption. If they find any, they can cut off the power supply and file a report. Using these devices is considered a serious offense, punishable by 3 to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 1,000 days’ minimum wage.

The new meters use Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology, making readings automatic and digital. This change is designed to give users clearer data about their energy consumption, ensuring they aren’t overcharged. CFE emphasizes that the meter replacement shouldn’t affect the power supply unless irregularities are found.

How to Verify CFE Workers

To avoid scams, homeowners can verify the identity of CFE workers by checking their official uniforms, valid ID badges, and CFE-branded vehicles. Workers are not allowed to enter homes or accept tips; they’re only authorized to access the meter. If homeowners notice anything suspicious, they can report it through official CFE channels.

Before the installation, CFE recommends clearing any objects around the meter to ensure a smooth process and accurate readings. The new meters are being installed free of charge, and homeowners who haven’t received theirs yet can contact their local CFE office to schedule an appointment.

As the rollout continues, CFE is urging homeowners to cooperate with the installation process. The new meters are expected to provide more precise energy consumption data, potentially leading to cost savings for users.
