CFE Warns of Nationwide Door-to-Door Scam Targeting Electricity Users

Scams are on the rise. Now, Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is warning its users about a scam that could put their safety at risk. It’s related to their workers.

During April and early May, CFE workers visited homes to replace old meters with new ones. But it seems scammers have caught on. They’re impersonating CFE workers to swindle users.

CFE Warns of Scams

The CFE issued a statement saying it’s detected suspicious activity. People are posing as CFE workers, endangering users’ safety. The CFE had been replacing old meters, but scammers are using this to their advantage.

The CFE clarified that there’s been confusion about a supposed “House by House” program. But it’s just their routine fieldwork. Users should be cautious and not let anyone in unless they’ve requested an inspection.

Scammers are targeting homes, pretending to be CFE workers. They’re asking for money to install new meters or “fines” of up to 100,000 pesos. The CFE says users should verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a worker.

How to Spot Fake Workers

The CFE says scammers can be convincing, but there are ways to tell. Fake workers might wear a uniform and carry fake credentials, but they won’t have all the right gear. Here’s how to spot a real CFE worker:

  • Complete uniform with the CFE logo
  • Verifiable employee ID
  • CFE-labeled vehicle
  • Order number and reason for the visit with a registered address

If you suspect something’s off, call the CFE at 071, available 24/7. The CFE is working to catch the scammers and protect its users, especially in areas like Nuevo León. Remember, real CFE workers won’t enter your home without a written order and your permission. Be cautious and stay safe.
