CFE Offers Free Solar Panel Installation with Specific Eligibility Requirements Nationwide

The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is making solar panels more accessible to the public. Rumors have been circulating that CFE is giving away or selling solar panels to the general population. To set the record straight, CFE has clarified its programs and whether it’s truly giving away solar panels.

Free Installation for Some

CFE has a program that offers free installation of solar panels for those who have already purchased their own equipment. To qualify, you must live in a rural or marginalized area, and your home must be far from the energy grid or have no access to it. This program is part of CFE’s strategy to provide electrification to underserved communities.

The program is a collaboration between CFE’s subdivision, CFE Distribución, and the Secretaría de Energía, managed by the Fondo de Servicio Universal Eléctrico (FSUE). If you’re eligible, you can get solar panels installed for free. However, if you don’t meet the criteria, you can still buy your own solar panels and request installation from CFE, but you’ll need to pay an annual recovery fee based on your chosen interconnection contract.

Saving Money with Solar

CFE’s ‘Sol del Norte’ program aims to bring solar panels to rural communities. The first phase focuses on low-income individuals. By participating in the program, users can reduce their energy costs. In fact, during the summer months, participants can expect to save 49% on their energy bills, while the rest of the year they’ll save around 89%. On average, users can expect to save 67% annually.

The benefits don’t stop there. By increasing the use of renewable energy, Mexico can reduce its carbon footprint. CFE expects a reduction of 4,864 tons of pollution. Registration for the program is currently open, but it’s unclear how long it will remain available. The first phase is limited to Mexicali, Baja California, but will eventually expand to other states.

To get started, check if you qualify for the free installation program or consider purchasing your own solar panels and requesting installation from CFE. With the potential to save money and contribute to a cleaner environment, it’s worth exploring your options.
