Summer is here and so are higher electricity bills. But the Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, is offering some relief to its customers.
In states where temperatures soar above 35 degrees Celsius, the demand for electricity goes up. This usually means a higher tariff, which translates to a bigger electricity bill. To help its customers, the CFE has implemented a subsidy to reduce the economic impact of the summer heat.
The subsidy applies to states where the heat is extreme and dry. These areas tend to use more electricity to power fans and air conditioners, which consume a lot of energy. In fact, the cost of electricity can double during the summer months in these regions.
Some states that will benefit from the subsidy include Sonora, Sinaloa, Baja California, and Nayarit. Customers in these states will receive a discount on their bimonthly electricity bills during the summer.
The CFE has a special tariff, known as Tarifa 1F, which offers a fixed preferential price for customers who qualify for the subsidy. The tariff is based on the customer’s energy consumption, with a maximum limit of 2500 kilowatt-hours per bimonthly period.
Here’s how the subsidy works:
- Basic: 0.83 pesos per 300 kWh
- Low-intermediate: 0.99 pesos per 900 kWh
- High-intermediate: 2.42 pesos per 1300 kWh
- Excess: 3.83 pesos per hour
Customers who use a lot of energy won’t qualify for the subsidy.
But that’s not all. The CFE also has a program to install free solar panels for low-income households. The program, called “Sol del Norte,” aims to provide clean and renewable energy to 5500 homes in Mexicali, Baja California.
The subsidy will be in effect from April 1 to October 31, giving households time to adjust their energy consumption after the extreme heat. For those who don’t qualify for the subsidy, the CFE recommends taking steps to reduce their energy consumption, such as turning off lights, using energy-efficient bulbs, and checking for energy leaks.
These measures can help households save money on their electricity bills and stay cool during the hot summer months.
