Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is offering a discount on electricity bills for households in regions with extreme temperatures. The discount will be available from May 1 to October 2025.
Who Qualifies for the Discount
Residents in 18 states will automatically receive the discount if they have a domestic electricity tariff. These states are Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Colima, San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, Morelos, Guerrero, Veracruz, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatán.
The discount doesn’t apply to high-consumption tariffs. The CFE categorizes tariffs from 1A to 1F based on consumption and region. The highest tariff, 1F, is for areas with average summer temperatures above 33°C.
New Tariff Rates
The CFE has set the following rates:
- Basic consumption (up to 300 kWh): $0.803 per kWh
- Low intermediate consumption (next 900 kWh): $0.996 per kWh
- High intermediate consumption (next 1300 kWh): $2.423 per kWh
- Excessive consumption (over 2500 kWh): $3.833 per kWh
Consuming over 2500 kWh every two months will automatically switch you to the high-consumption tariff, which is not eligible for the discount.
Tips to Reduce Electricity Consumption
To maximize the discount, households can adopt simple practices to reduce their electricity usage. These include:
- Using natural ventilation at night and keeping windows and doors closed during the day.
- Preferring fans over air conditioners, as they consume less energy.
- Unplugging electrical appliances when not in use.
By combining these habits with the CFE’s discount, households in eligible states can significantly lower their electricity bills during the summer months.
