Carlota Ciganda shines at HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore

Carlota Ciganda starts with good foot the HSBC Women's World Championship

The LPGA’s Asian tour has made its way to Singapore, where the Sentosa Golf Club is playing host to the HSBC Women’s World Championship. With the strong winds making conditions challenging, only 13 players managed to card a score under par in the first round. One of those who succeeded was Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who shot a 71 (-1) to take an early lead, just ahead of South Korea’s Lim Kim, who signed off with a 68.

Leaders After the First Round

England’s Charley Hull, freshly back in the world’s top 10, is sitting in second place after a bogey-free 69. She’s closely followed by a group of four players tied in third with 70, including Mexico’s Gaby López. Carlota Ciganda finds herself in a group of players who carded 71, which also includes the world’s number two, Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul, and number three, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko. Ciganda’s round was marked by five birdies and four bogeys, showing her ability to balance her game despite the tough conditions.

A Strong Field Despite Notable Absences

The tournament boasts an impressive lineup, with nine of the world’s top 10 players participating, along with 13 of the top 15. Notably absent is Nelly Korda, the world number one, who opted to skip the Asian tour this year. Korda has expressed her desire to take small breaks during the season, using these periods to rest and disconnect from golf for a few days. This decision reflects her focus on maintaining a balance that allows her to perform at her best when she does compete. With such a strong field, the HSBC Women’s World Championship is shaping up to be an exciting event, with several players poised to make a move up the leaderboard as the tournament progresses.
