Calixte takes it out again in the shutout of Águilas over Toros

Orlando Calixte homered for the second day in a row and four pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout, leading the Águilas Cibaeñas to a 3-0 victory over the Toros del Este on Tuesday night at the Francisco Michelli stadium in La Romana.

The Eagles achieved their second victory in a row and remain in second position with a 3-1 record. The Bulls (1-3) suffered their third consecutive loss.

Calixte hit the ball off a pitch from bullfighting reliever Deivy Méndez in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 3-0.

The pitching of the Eagles painted the locals white, with an excellent performance by starter Osvaldo Bidó, who in three scoreless innings allowed only two hits, gave away a transfer and struck out five batters.

The victory went to the American reliever Jesse Scholtens (1-0) who entered the fourth episode and worked four innings of only three hits and struck out three rivals. Richard Rodríguez (2) earned a save by pitching the ninth inning flawlessly.

In addition to Bidó and Scholtens, eaglet Nick Wittgren (8) and Rodríguez (9) worked on the mound.

Bulls starter Carlos Hernández (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing one run and three hits in 3 1/3 innings. Then they continued to pitch for the Bulls, Deivy Méndez (4), Hansel Rodríguez (6), Joel Peguero (8) and José Domínguez (9).

The Eagles scored their first run in the fourth inning against Hernandez, when Yoenis Céspedes doubled to left field and scored on Tyler Nevis’ triple to left field.

In the fifth inning, Las Águilas returned to the attack and increased their lead to 3-0 when Cade Gotta walked to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to Ramón Torres’ left field. Calixte went to the batter’s box and hit his solo home run to left field.

For the Eagles, Calixte stood out on offense with his home run and an RBI, Nevis a triple and an RBI, Céspedes hit a double and a run scored, Andretty Cordero a double and Gotta with a single and a run scored.

For the Bulls, Marcos Hernández a double, Mallex Smith, Yamaico Navarro, John Nogowski and Danny Santana a single each.
