Cabo Rojo-Pedernales, a new tourist destination in the Dominican Republic

The promise of tourism development in the southern region begins to be fulfilled with the start of work to create the new destination Cabo Rojo-Pedernalesfocused on the environmental and sociocultural sustainability of that locality.

In March, the government began the construction of highways, aqueducts and electrical connections that will give way to the construction of hotels and tourist complexes contained in the development master plan of the southern province.

Pedernales is located 310 kilometers south of Santo Domingo and 500 kilometers from the eastern region of the country.which is where the large tourism projects are concentrated, such as the complex Punta Canawhich represents the main benchmark of the half-island for vacationers at an international level.

It is one of the most economically depressed border provinces with Haiti in the Dominican Republic, but rich in natural resources, since 68% of its territory is declared a protected areaand is considered a “Biosphere Reserve” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

The ‘Cabo Rojo-Pedernales Tourism Development Plan’ is under the coordination of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), which leads its execution through a trust.

Cabo Rojo-Pedernales, will be the first tourist destination in the Caribbean developed from scratch under a public-private partnershipwith a luxury offer based on sustainable tourism, taking care of every detail to offer tourists an ecological and adventure experience”, says the executive director of the DGAPP, Sigmund Freund.

The official explains that the destination was planned based on the conservation of the environment, for which the hotel infrastructures are withdrawing 200 meters from the beach, when the norm is that it be 60 meters.

“The differentiating element of this work is that it has beaches nestled in a national park, it is a virgin destination and it is the first tourist destination in the southern region that is going to impact”, indicates Freund.

The development of Cabo Rojo will include the construction of luxury and ecological hotels, with sustainable energy generation capacity, in addition to the construction of affordable housing for the employees of the area and the project.

It consists of four phases in 10 years -average implementation-, with an investment estimated at 2,245 million dollars for 12,000 rooms.

For the beginning of next August, they plan to start construction of the first hotel, which would begin operating at the end of 2024. In the first phase, eight hotels of the Hilton, Marriott, Sunwing, AmResorts, Iberostar Group and Karisma Hotels & Resort chains are planned to be built. .

“We have received the visit of Spanish, Mexican and Qatari groups interested in the project,” says the official. In addition to potential foreign investors, the four Pension Fund Administrators that operate in the country are interested in participating.

Freund adds that they are exploring the possibility of opening a cruise port in Cabo Rojo, with a view to having it operational by the end of 2023.
