BYD Doubles Tesla Sales in Europe as EV Market Shifts Power

The European electric car market is seeing a surprising change. For years, Tesla led the charge, but new figures suggest its dominance in Europe is fading fast. As the market grows, a new challenger, BYD, is quickly gaining ground. In fact, BYD recently sold twice as many electric vehicles in Europe compared to Tesla.

Overall, Europe’s new car sales picked up speed in July 2025. The market grew by 7.4% compared to the same month last year. This helped turn around a small dip seen in the first seven months of the year. Much of this growth came from battery-powered electric cars. These vehicles saw registrations jump by 39.1% year-over-year. They now make up 15.6% of the market, up from 12.5% in 2024. Hybrid cars still hold the largest share at 34.7%. Cars running on gasoline or diesel saw their share shrink to 37.7%. This shows a clear shift towards cleaner driving options.

The competition among carmakers is also clear. The Volkswagen Group remains the top seller. They registered 262,069 cars, a 13.7% increase from July 2024. This gives them a strong 28.7% market share. Other big names also saw growth. Renault sold 96,943 units, up 9.4%. BMW saw a 14.3% rise with 67,957 cars sold. Stellantis, however, slipped slightly with a 0.9% drop. They held 14.9% of the market.

While many brands are thriving, Tesla is hitting a rough patch. The company registered just 8,837 new electric cars in July. This marks a significant 40% drop from the same time last year. It was also the seventh month in a row that Tesla’s sales declined. This trend shows Tesla is losing its grip on the European market.

Several factors seem to be behind Tesla’s struggles. More electric car options from other brands mean stiffer competition. But it’s not just that. Public comments from Elon Musk, Tesla’s leader, and his connections to the Trump administration have also played a role. These issues appear to be hurting how Europeans see the brand. Yet, there’s a possible silver lining for Tesla. The company announced a new, more affordable model. Production for this car should begin in the second half of 2025. This could help Tesla regain some ground.

Tesla BYD electric cars Europe

Stepping into this changing scene is BYD, a company that is truly on the rise. In July, BYD registered 13,503 cars in Europe. This marks an amazing 225% jump from the previous year. This rapid growth positions BYD as a major challenger to Tesla in Europe. BYD’s success comes from a clear strategy. They are increasing their presence and investing heavily. This includes opening more dealerships and expanding their manufacturing. These moves are reshaping the electric car market balance in Europe.
