Bus accident leaves nine dead and 16 injured in Ecuador’s Amazon

A bus accident in the Ecuadorian Amazon left at least nine dead and 16 people injured, the Integrated Security Service ECU911 reported on Sunday.

So far they are registered "9 people died, in addition (to) 16 people injured"the agency said in a statement, without specifying further details.

The accident occurred on a highway near the community of Río Colorado, in the Amazon province of Morona Santiago, in the southeast of the country, on the border with Peru.

The local transport vehicle covered the route between the provincial capital Macas and the town of Taisha, according to relief agencies.

The bus rushed into a ravine, according to the images released by ECU911.

The previous week, in the same province, another transport had overturned with a balance of 18 dead and 25 injured.

Traffic accidents are one of the main causes of death in Ecuador.

Between January and November 2021, 19,337 traffic accidents were registered, which left 15,801 injured and 1,888 dead, according to statistics from the state National Transit Agency (ANT).
