British Open: Jon Rahm Stays in Contention Despite Difficult Day

The third round of the British Open saw a stark contrast in conditions, with some golfers enjoying a pleasant day while others faced challenging weather. Jon Rahm was one of the few who managed to complete his round without interruption, carding a 72 (+1) to remain in contention.

The "Lion of Barrika" struggled with the wet conditions, but his accurate play around the green kept him in the hunt. Rahm is now six strokes behind leader Billy Horschel (209) and tied for 15th place with a cumulative score of 215.

Rahm’s round featured one birdie, two bogeys, and 15 pars, with the 29-year-old Spaniard citing a lack of consistent putting as the main culprit. Despite a double bogey on the 18th hole, Rahm remains focused on his game, saying, "I didn’t know it was going to be so complicated. I played well, but I lost strokes on the first seven holes. I think I gained more on the field from the 9th onwards."

The standings have tightened, with a number of players including Shane Lowry, Xander Schauffele, and Scottie Scheffler all within striking distance. The American players could achieve a historic quadruple major sweep this year, something that has not been done since 1982.

Other Notable Performances

  • Jorge Campillo closed Saturday with a 73, while amateur Luis Masaveu carded a 78.

  • Thriston Lawrence (65), Sam Burns (65), Adam Scott (66), and Justin Thomas (67) all benefited from the good weather conditions on the course.
