Climate Disasters on the Rise in Brazil
Brazil has witnessed a significant surge in climate-related disasters over the past four years, with the number of such events nearly doubling compared to the previous two decades.
Study Reveals Alarming Scenario
A recent scientific study, conducted by the research arm of the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and supported by the Brazilian government and UNESCO, highlights the alarming rate at which climate disasters are occurring in Brazil.
According to the study, between 2020 and 2023, Brazil experienced an average of 4,077 climate-related disasters per year, which is almost double the average of 2,073 disasters recorded annually between 2000 and 2019.
Types of Climate Disasters
The study notes that climate disasters in Brazil include a range of events such as droughts, floods, violent storms, extreme temperatures, cyclones, and landslides.
Correlation with Ocean Surface Temperatures
The research also reveals a correlation between the climate disasters suffered in Brazil and the warming of ocean surface temperatures.
Record Droughts and Floods
In addition, the study highlights the record droughts and floods experienced in Brazil in 2024, which further exacerbate the climate challenges facing the country.
Economic Losses
The study estimates that the economic losses caused by climate disasters in Brazil between 1995 and 2023 amount to approximately $88.4 billion.
Call to Action
The researchers emphasize the need for urgent measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change and strengthen the resilience of natural and human systems to confront the challenges posed by climate disasters.
