Bolivia’s Tensions Persist Following Foiled Coup Attempt

Tension remained in the air in Bolivia, after the attempted coup d'état

Bolivian Government Detains 17 Suspects in Connection with Coup Attempt against President Luis Arce

The government of Bolivia has announced the arrest of 17 individuals, including active and retired military personnel and civilians, in connection with a failed coup against President Luis Arce.

Crimes

The accused include General Juan José Zúñiga and Vice Admiral Juan Arnez, former commanders of the army and navy, who are charged with armed uprising and terrorism. They face a maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted.

Events Unfold

The attempted coup unfolded on Wednesday, when the presidential palace was surrounded by troops and armored vehicles commanded by Zúñiga. The situation became most tense when a tank attempted to break into the building, but the soldiers finally retreated after more than three hours, reportedly following Arce’s swearing-in of a new military leadership.

Speculations and Reactions

The population was left divided and confused about what actually transpired. Some, like agricultural engineer María Carvajal, believed that the incident was a serious attempt to destabilize the government, while others felt that it was a staged event orchestrated by Arce himself.

Background Context

Bolivia’s economic crisis, resulting from decreasing gas production and a lack of investment and exploration, has led to significant discontent across various sectors. Additionally, the struggle for control of the Movement Towards Socialism party between President Arce and former President Evo Morales continues.

Implications

Despite reports of international support, analysts predict that the failed coup attempt is only a symptom of deeper discontent within Bolivia. With the 2025 presidential elections approaching, the country remains engulfed in uncertainty.

For Its Part

President Arce has yet to confirm whether he will seek re-election. Morales, on the other hand, continues to assert that Arce is maneuvering to remove him from the running, despite being disqualified as a candidate by the Constitutional Court.
