Bolivia Denounces Coup Attempt

Bolivia’s President Luis Arce has condemned “irregular movements” of soldiers outside the government headquarters in La Paz.

In a social media post, Arce wrote, “We denounce irregular mobilizations of some units of the Bolivian Army. Democracy must be respected.”

Earlier, former President Evo Morales sounded the alarm on social media, warning of a possible coup d’état and calling for a national mobilization to defend democracy. He declared an indefinite general strike and road blockade, vowing that the people would not be intimidated by the Armed Forces.

The warning comes after the commander of the Bolivian Army, Juan José Zuñiga, was removed from his position last Tuesday following threats against Morales.
