Former Manchester United assistant Benni McCarthy has offered a stark assessment of the “hellish pressure” faced by coaches at elite football clubs, praising Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim for his steadfast approach to criticism.
McCarthy, who served under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, described the immense scrutiny at United. He stated the coaching role at such a club brings “pressure from hell.”
“The biggest challenge any coach faces is the magnitude of the club,” McCarthy told a betting website. “Manchester United is gigantic. Any news, however irrelevant, is big news when it comes to United.”
He emphasized that everyone wants to comment on United. This generates constant headlines due to the club’s sheer size.
McCarthy recalled how his coaching staff tried to control what they could internally. They accepted the external noise and focused on creating a positive environment.
Despite efforts to block out criticism, McCarthy acknowledged its impact. He noted how external voices affect individuals trying to build something.
“Even now, everyone has something to say about Ruben Amorim,” McCarthy added. He expressed admiration for the Portuguese coach.
McCarthy lauded Amorim’s attitude. “I’m happy he’s tough and just ignores everything,” he said.
Amorim works his own way, McCarthy explained. He was hired for his capabilities, and the club supports him.
“Let everyone else from outside talk, he continues to do his job,” McCarthy concluded. He believes Amorim is now reaping the rewards.
The former South African international played for FC Porto between 2003 and 2006.
