Benfica President Rui Costa Announces Fan Congress: Team Can ‘Turn It Around’

Benfica President Rui Costa has announced an upcoming congress for the club’s global network of supporters’ clubs, aiming to strengthen unity while also addressing the team’s recent struggles on the field.

The “Congress of Benfica Houses” is scheduled for March 27-28 of next year, promising a “moment of great significance and special importance for the future of the club.” Costa urged all Benfica Houses to participate “massively and express their ambitions,” emphasizing the need to collectively determine the club’s path forward. The event aims to reinforce the crucial role these fan groups play in club life.

Speaking to supporters, Costa acknowledged the current season “has not been easy,” particularly concerning the team’s standing in the league championship and the Champions League.

Despite these setbacks, he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to “overcome difficulties and turn things around,” ensuring they meet established objectives. Costa highlighted the team’s recent Super Cup victory and its qualification for the Champions League group stage. “But it’s not enough, we want much more,” he stated, adding that ambitions remain “intact on all fronts.”

Costa made the announcement during a return visit to a Benfica supporters’ club in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, fulfilling a campaign promise made during his re-election. The visit also marked the 73rd anniversary of the Caldas da Rainha club, described by Costa as one of the most “historic and emblematic” Benfica Houses.
