An associate of a former Benfica presidential candidate publicly criticized the club’s current leadership for their absence during a halftime ceremony honoring successful women’s teams, reigniting scrutiny over the club’s internal dynamics.
Felipe Gomes, who served as vice-president for Modalidades under João Noronha Lopes’ presidential bid, posted his criticism on social media. He specifically called out the current board for not being in the tribune when Benfica’s women’s roller hockey and water polo teams were recognized on the pitch. The teams were being honored for their recent championship victories.
Noronha Lopes, a former presidential candidate for the Portuguese football giant, also attended the match yesterday and shared a photo of his presence on social media.
Benfica’s current president, Rui Costa, watched the match from a private box. He was accompanied by Gilberto Coimbra, the president of visiting team Tondela.
Former Benfica player and coach Toni was also seated with the club’s president. Several other directors and former players were seen in the main tribune at the stadium.
