Benfica Aims to Break Losing Streak Against Sporting in Volleyball Derby

A highly anticipated volleyball derby between Portuguese rivals Benfica and Sporting is set for Sunday, with both teams under pressure to secure vital wins after recent setbacks. The crucial match, scheduled for 7 p.m. local time, is part of a double-header weekend in the Portuguese Championship and is being framed as a “settling of scores.”

Benfica enters the contest determined to secure its first victory against Sporting, having suffered four consecutive defeats to its long-standing rival. The most recent loss occurred in the Super Cup final earlier this season.

Sporting, despite winning the Super Cup, also faces significant pressure. The team experienced an unexpected defeat against Leixões in the first round of the Championship.

Japa, a Zone 4 player for Benfica, noted the intensity surrounding the upcoming derby. He told the club’s website that the match “will be well-contested, nervous.”

Japa added that while Sporting’s recent league loss might not directly influence their performance, Benfica’s team “has evolved a lot in recent weeks and will seek more victories.”

Sporting’s captain and Zone 4 player, Tiago Pereira, expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rebound. He stated on Sporting’s official site, “We hope to give a good response to what happened last weekend.”

Pereira acknowledged the team’s strong start in the Super Cup but conceded they “entered the League with the wrong foot.” He emphasized the team’s focus on securing “both victories” this weekend.

Before the derby, both clubs have other league commitments. Benfica is scheduled to host Clube K on Saturday at 5 p.m. local time at its home arena, the Luz.

Sporting will play V. Guimarães at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. local time. The team aims to reverse its recent fortunes before confronting Benfica at the Luz arena on Sunday.
