Baskonia’s Mysterious Dry Spell in the Cup Continues Unabated

Chances of Copa del Rey Participation Fade Away

Baskonia’s hopes of participating in the Copa del Rey are dwindling rapidly. Following a crushing 29-point defeat at the hands of Bàsquet Girona, the team’s chances of securing a spot in the tournament have become extremely slim.

To have any chance of participating, Baskonia would need to achieve a series of unlikely outcomes. They would have to defeat Río Breogán on matchday 17, while also relying on Barça and Casademont Zaragoza to lose their respective matches. Furthermore, they would need to improve their average, which currently stands at -23, a significant disadvantage compared to their competitors.

Coach Pablo Laso acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating that he prefers not to dwell on failures. However, he emphasized that the teams that deserve to participate in the Cup or playoff are those that have earned it through their performance.

Recent Decline in Domestic Competitions

If Baskonia ultimately fails to secure a spot in the Copa del Rey, it would mark their second consecutive absence from the tournament. This would be the fourth time in six years that the team has missed out on the competition.

This decline in domestic competitions is a far cry from the team’s past successes. Baskonia has a rich history in the Copa del Rey, having won six titles between 1995 and 2009. However, their recent struggles have made it clear that the team is facing significant challenges in regaining its former glory.
