Banksy Unveils Judge Smashing Protestor Mural at London Royal Courts

An unexpected and stark piece of art appeared on the walls of London’s historic Royal Courts of Justice this past Monday. The elusive graffiti artist, Banksy, took credit for the painting. It showed a judge in full black robes and a white wig, gavel raised high, seemingly striking a fallen protester. The protester lay on the ground, clutching a sign splattered with what looked like blood.

Banksy confirmed his work on Instagram, as he often does, with a simple caption: “Royal Courts Of Justice. London.” The striking image quickly sparked conversation. However, its presence was short-lived. Security teams moved swiftly to cover the mural with black plastic sheeting. They put up a double metal fence and added two police officers and CCTV cameras to guard the spot.

Court officials explained their quick action. The building itself is a 143-year-old Victorian Gothic structure. It holds a “listed building” status, meaning it’s protected by law. This designation means its original appearance must be preserved. Therefore, the artwork had to be removed.

Even though the artwork didn’t name any specific event or group, many saw a clear message. It seemed to speak directly to the British government’s recent ban on the group Palestine Action. This ban led to the arrests of nearly 900 people during protests in London just last Saturday. The timing of Banksy’s piece felt like a direct commentary on these events.

The group Defend Our Juries, which organized some of the protests, issued a statement. They called Banksy’s work a “powerful reflection of the violence that comes from such a ban.” They added, “When laws are used to crush people’s freedom, it doesn’t stop dissent. Instead, it makes it stronger.” The legal battle for Palestine Action continues, with a High Court judge recently allowing an appeal after a lower court had initially rejected it. The government is now preparing to challenge this decision again.

Banksy started his career spraying buildings in Bristol, England. He has since become one of the most famous artists globally. His street art and installations regularly fetch millions of dollars at auction. Yet, his works also often attract thieves and vandals, adding to their mysterious allure.

Banksy’s art frequently takes on political issues. Many of his pieces criticize government policies on immigration and war, always with a sharp edge. Last summer, he unveiled a collection focused on animals. That series ended with a mural of a gorilla, appearing to prop open the entrance to the London Zoo. For nine days straight, other creatures he created popped up in unexpected places across the city. There was a mountain goat clinging to a building’s base, piranhas circling a police guard post, and a rhino getting into a taxi. Banksy’s art continues to surprise and provoke thought.
