The cricket situation in Bangladesh is currently facing challenges. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has established a special investigation team to assist the Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) in addressing a recent corruption case in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). This decision was made after the ACU identified at least 8 matches as suspicious, with concerns of spot fixing and match fixing. The current BPL season is under scrutiny due to these corruption allegations.
Investigation and Suspicious Matches
According to reports, the anti-corruption unit is investigating 10 players and 4 teams. Out of the 7 teams in the league, more than half of the franchises are under investigation for corruption. All 10 players and 4 teams are being closely monitored. Notably, 6 of the 10 cricketers under investigation have played for the Bangladesh national team, including 2 uncapped Bangladeshi players and 2 foreign players.
The investigation is focused on the following 6 matches:
- Fortune Barishal vs Minister Group (6 January)
- Rangpur Riders vs Dhaka (7 January)
- Dhaka vs Sylhet (10 January)
- Rajshahi vs Dhaka (12 January)
- Chittagong vs Sylhet (13 January)
- Barishal vs Open Tigers (22 January)
BCB’s Stance on Corruption
BCB President Farooq Ahmed stated that anyone found guilty of corruption will face strict action. The board appears to be committed to its promise, having formed a special team to support the Anti Corruption Unit. The BCB has also issued a statement, emphasizing its efforts to maintain the dignity of cricket in Bangladesh.
