A devastating piece of news has emerged from Australia, where a Pakistani-origin Australian cricketer, Junaid Jafar Khan, tragically lost his life during a match. The extreme heat is being cited as the cause of his death. This incident occurred last Saturday at the Concordia College Oval, where a match was underway between Old Concordians and Prince Alfred Old Collegians. At around 4 pm, Junaid collapsed on the field and, sadly, the medical team was unable to revive him.
What Led to This Tragic Outcome?
At the time of the incident, the temperature was soaring, having already surpassed 40 degrees Celsius. According to the Adelaide Cricket Turf Association’s guidelines, play is supposed to be halted when the temperature reaches 42 degrees Celsius, while 40 degrees is the threshold beyond which the possibility of stopping play is considered. Local Australian media reports suggested that Junaid was observing the holy month of Ramadan and had been fasting, consuming only water throughout the day. It was also mentioned that the intense heat caused him to collapse on the field four times.
Junaid, who was over 40 years old, had moved to Adelaide from Pakistan in 2013 to advance his career in the tech industry. His friend, Hassan Anjum, expressed his condolences, saying, “This is extremely sad news; he had so much more to achieve in his life.” Another friend, Najam Hassan, described Junaid as a very good person. Currently, temperatures in Sydney and Victoria are hovering around 40 degrees, with some areas exceeding that mark.

Junaid’s team released a statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a valued member of the Old Concordian Cricket Club.” The President of the Islamic Society of South Australia also extended condolences to Junaid’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
