Assam Dedicates Festivals to Zubeen Garg, Cancels Cultural Programs

Assam is currently observing a period of mourning following the passing of beloved singer Zubeen Garg. His death has prompted numerous event organizers to alter their plans for the upcoming Diwali and Kali Puja festivities.

Many organizers across the state have decided to dedicate this year’s Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations to Garg, who died approximately one month ago. This move reflects the deep sense of loss felt throughout the region.

The Vivekananda Sporting Club in Kalapahar, Guwahati, is among those adjusting their schedule. The club is organizing its 61st Kali Puja festival, themed around Lord Shiva, which is set to begin on October 20.

Shashank Chakraborty, the club’s joint secretary, confirmed their decision. “On the demise of our famous singer Zubeen Garg, we have decided not to organize any cultural programs this year,” Chakraborty told ANI. “We have dedicated our stage to our beloved singer.”

Elsewhere, event organizer Suman indicated that a light and sound show would be featured during the puja this year. This highlights a shift from traditional cultural performances to more commemorative displays.

Girish Das, Cultural Secretary for the Dynamo Club in Ulubari, echoed similar sentiments. “This year we have dedicated our puja to Zubeen Garg,” Das stated. He added, “We will only perform rituals, no other programs. We will organize an event so that people can pay tribute to Zubeen Garg.”

In the Pandu region, Kali Puja organizer Biswajit Sutradhar also confirmed program reductions. “The entire state is mourning the demise of Zubeen Garg,” Sutradhar said. “This year we have decided to cut down on some programs.”
