It was a jarring start to Friday morning for delivery drivers in Montevideo. Two armed individuals carried out a quick series of attacks. They committed one successful robbery and attempted another within minutes. The incidents happened in the city’s Belvedere and Nuevo París areas.
The more serious incident unfolded first, in the Belvedere neighborhood. This happened at the intersection of Fray Generoso Pérez and Emancipación. Here, the bandits cornered a delivery truck. They threatened the workers with guns. Then, they demanded all the cash collected so far.
Police sources told the News Agency news outlet that the driver handed over $29,700. The passenger gave them another $9,000. This meant the criminals made off with nearly $39,000 in total. Luckily, no one was hurt. However, the attackers did fire a shot into the air as they escaped. Investigators noted something important at the scene. They found no shell casings. This suggests the robbers likely used a revolver. With revolvers, the empty shell remains inside the gun. This means it leaves no evidence behind.
A Prior Attempt in Nuevo París
It turns out this wasn’t their first stop. Police confirmed that these two same individuals had tried a similar holdup just minutes earlier. That failed attempt happened about three kilometers away, in the Nuevo París neighborhood.
At the corner of Yugoeslavia and General Hornos, they had approached a different delivery truck. There, too, they fired a single shot. But, for some reason, they couldn’t get away with any money or goods. Sources added that one worker suffered minor cuts. These injuries came from glass that splintered when the bullet struck the windshield. Despite the scare, those delivery drivers kept going for a few blocks. They finally pulled over their vehicle near the Santa Lucía street intersection.
Detectives from Zona Operacional I are now handling the investigation into both crimes. They are currently reviewing security camera footage from the areas. Their goal is to identify these criminals. They also hope to track their movements after the incidents.
