Apple to Rename iOS 19 to iOS 26 for Simplified Versioning

Apple is shaking things up with its operating system names. Bloomberg News reports that the tech giant might start naming its OS updates after the year they’re used in, like car models in the US.

So, if this is true, the new iOS update coming out at the end of 2025 would be called iOS 26, not iOS 19. This change could be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2025, at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

What’s Changing?

This new naming scheme wouldn’t just apply to iOS, which runs on iPhones. It would also be used for other Apple operating systems like:

  • iPadOS for iPads
  • macOS for Macs
  • watchOS for Apple Watches
  • tvOS for Apple TVs
  • visionOS for Vision Pro

This would make all of Apple’s operating systems more consistent and less confusing for users and developers.

A New Look?

There are also rumors that Apple is planning a major redesign of its user interface (UI). The goal is to make it easier to use, get to what you need quickly, and learn how to use it. This could be the biggest design upgrade since iOS 7 in 2013.

The new UI design is reportedly codenamed “Solarium” and would be used across all Apple operating systems. This would make it easier for users to switch between devices.
