Apple Simplifies App Data Transfer Between iPhone and Android

Apple is developing a new framework aimed at significantly simplifying the often-frustrating process of transferring app-specific user data when switching from an iPhone to an Android device.

The framework, named AppMigrationKit, is designed for app developers. It will enable them to build support for exporting local user data from their applications, allowing for seamless transfers between platforms.

This addresses a long-standing challenge for users migrating operating systems. Existing methods, such as the Android Switch app or USB transfers, typically fail to move critical app settings, saved game progress, and other specific application data.

AppMigrationKit is currently in its beta phase and is expected to function with iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and subsequent versions. Its development follows observations by Apple enthusiasts who noted the company was integrating a native “Transfer to Android” option directly within iPhone Settings.

While the overall process of switching between iOS and Android has become easier over the years, transferring comprehensive data remains cumbersome. Apple acknowledges this friction point.

There is no official release date for the framework. Even after it becomes available to developers, consumers will need to wait for individual app creators to integrate the new functionality into their applications. Not all developers may adopt it immediately, meaning a complete solution will not be instantaneous.

Despite the rollout timeline, Apple’s initiative to create a smoother migration path for app data is seen as a significant win for consumers. The move also raises questions about whether Google will develop a similar tool to streamline the reverse process from Android to iOS.
