Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed previously undisclosed details of a private meeting with then-U.S. President Donald Trump, including discussions on Middle East peace and economic concessions, while simultaneously emphasizing the critical importance of diplomatic confidentiality.
Anwar made the revelations during a press conference held at the Plenary Hall of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The remarks followed the closing ceremony of what he referred to as the 47th ASEAN Summit.
He recounted how Trump, during his presidency, had invited Anwar to ride in his car from the airport to the convention center. Anwar described this invitation as a departure from standard diplomatic protocol.
During the unusual ride, Anwar discussed Malaysia’s vital semiconductor export industry. He specifically raised the issue of 0% taxes on these exports to the U.S.
Anwar expressed gratitude to Trump for granting this favorable tax status to Malaysia, noting its significance for the country’s economy.
The conversation also touched on the complex issue of Middle East peace. Anwar informed Trump of his direct engagement with Hamas leaders in Doha.
Anwar stated he conveyed his support for peace initiatives led by Arab and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries aimed at achieving peace in Israel. He credited Trump with a significant role in these efforts.
Trump’s response, as relayed by Anwar, indicated that these efforts were “just the first phase.” Trump added that “more work to do” was needed, and he would “try seriously” to continue progress.
Anwar stressed the importance of respecting private conversations between leaders. He stated that such discussions must remain confidential.
He made a veiled reference to past incidents where private phone conversations were leaked. Anwar warned that such actions would deter others from engaging in confidential dialogue.
“If there are leaks, like in the past, or sound recordings of telephone conversations released, no one would want to talk to you,” Anwar said. He affirmed his practice of only disclosing topics he considered appropriate for public release.
Anwar described Trump as a “good listener” during their exchange. He noted they covered various bilateral issues, regional neighbors, and global topics including China, Brazil, and South Africa.
“I think I was fortunate to be in a position that afforded me the opportunity for a private and confidential conversation,” Anwar remarked. He added that he felt he had done his best to present his views.
