American Sprinter Fred Kerley Detained for Alleged Assault in Miami Ahead of Event

American sprinter Fred Kerley is in hot water again. The 29-year-old athlete, who won bronze in the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, was arrested Thursday night in Miami, Florida. The Grand Slam Track organization confirmed the arrest, saying the case is under investigation by the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.

Trouble at the Track

Kerley won’t be competing in the upcoming Grand Slam Track event. The organization didn’t provide details about the arrest. According to reports, Kerley was accused of “battery by contact or strike” following an incident at the athletes’ hotel. No further information was released about the arrest or Kerley’s possible release.

This isn’t Kerley’s first run-in with the law. In January, he was arrested in Miami Beach after a scuffle with police. He faced charges of assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. A taser was used to subdue him.

A History of Off-Field Issues

Kerley’s troubles extend beyond his recent arrest. In May 2024, he was accused of domestic violence and theft involving his ex-partner. He denied both allegations. Despite these issues, Kerley remains a top athlete. He won silver in the 100m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and became world champion in the same event in 2022.

  • Charges: battery by contact or strike
  • Previous arrests: Miami Beach (January 2025), domestic violence and theft allegations (May 2024)
  • Athletic achievements: bronze (Paris 2024 Olympics), silver (Tokyo 2020 Olympics), world champion (2022)

The Broward County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the latest incident. Kerley’s future in athletics hangs in the balance as he faces these new allegations.
